Welcome to the course for introductory neuro exercise specialist! ReYu Paralysis Recovery Centre is a non-profit wellness centre for individuals with spinal cord injuries and associated disorders that focuses on recovery potential over limitations and labels. We believe strongly in the concept of: You don’t know until you try. Which brings us to our motto of: RECONNECT, RETRAIN, & REDEFINE. These 3 words really embody what we are trying to do as an organization. We seek to reconnect the brain to muscles below the level of injury, we retrain the nervous system through awakening old neural pathways or facilitating the production of new pathways, and lastly we are redefining what is possible post injury and in effect challenging the commonly accepted prognoses.
Recovery is a long term process. The way we like to explain it is after sustaining a spinal cord injury it’s like going back to being an infant. However, this time, the development is not innate. What that means is you have to re-teach your body how to roll over, to sit up, to crawl, all before you can walk. The progression isn’t natural and requires a lot of hard work, dedication and commitment from both the client and neuro exercise specialist. It takes a typical developing child around 3 years to become proficient at walking and until they are around 5 years old to become proficient at running. Taking these time frames into consideration it puts recovery into perspective and leads us to ask the question, why do we put so much emphasis on the first 6 months and then stop all recovery efforts even when the nervous system may still be remodeling?
Our approach to recovery is multifaceted and we believe this is the reason for our client’s success. This course is designed to give new trainers the base knowledge of anatomy, physiology, common injuries and concepts surrounding our activity based therapy program. There is a lot of information within these pages and although we’d like you to know it inside out we understand that it doesn’t happen overnight. The most valuable learning occurs on the floor through apprenticeship which is why this program is more than just an online course. With that said we encourage specialist collaboration, client feedback and input, along with constructive criticism from all parties.
As technology and science advances, this course will be updated to keep up with the ever changing fields of neuroplasticity and neuroscience. We encourage you to ask your questions, seek out training opportunities and strive to be the best specialist you can be. We believe in supporting our specialists to reach their full potential so we can continue impacting the community and changing lives.
